Want Clarity on Your Purpose? Get to Know Your Strengths

What if getting clear on your purpose is easier than you think?

Have you ever wondered, What am I good at? or How can my unique strengths help me pursue meaningful work? If those questions have crossed your mind, this episode is for you.

Last week, we met Jill Felix, a certified Core Clarity facilitator and passionate coach who helps believers understand how God has gifted them. In part 2 of my conversation with Jill, she offers practical insights and encouragement to help you uncover your unique strengths and start living on purpose as a Christian woman.

IF YOU’VE EVER WONDERED HOW GOD MIGHT USE YOUR TALENTS, THIS IS THE EPISODE FOR YOU!

Jill’s story is full of wisdom about embracing your God-given gifts while trusting Him through the process of pursuing a dream.

In this episode, you’ll learn:
🌱 Why it’s essential to understand your God-given talents,
🛤️ That there are multiple paths to bring a dream to life, and
⚡ A practical exercise to help you manage your energy and avoid burnout.

But here’s the key: This conversation isn’t about overnight success or how your strengths can make pursuing a dream “easy.” Talents take time and effort to develop into strengths. And ultimately, we are called to live in dependence on Christ and for His glory—not our own.

If you’ve been wrestling with questions about your purpose or feeling stuck in your dream journey, let this conversation be a gentle nudge to trust the process, lean into your gifts, and let God lead the way.

Throughout this month we are exploring the theme of purpose, so press play and let’s get started!

Scripture:

The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” .... But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.

1 Corinthians 12:21, 24b-25 (NIV)

The unedited transcript for this episode of The Devoted Dreamers Podcast follows:

Welcome to episode 332 of the Devoted Dreamers Podcast. Today’s topic is all about getting clear on your purpose by getting to know your strengths.

But first: would you take a minute to answer a few questions about your experience listening to the Devoted Dreamers podcast? I always want to know what resonates with you, how I can be of service to you on your dream journey, and what I could do better to help you on this journey. Whether this is your first episode or one of many, you can share your thoughts with me; I’ve got 4 quick questions at: https://www.merrittonsa.com/input - I’ll put that link in your podcast app or in the show notes if you want to come back to it after you listen today.

Last week in part 1 of my conversation with Jill Felix she shared her deepest desire: to help believers know how God has wired and gifted them for the work they will do in the world. She does this work as a nationally certified Core Clarity Facilitator but for those unfamiliar with Core Clarity, it’s probably more useful to hear these words that have been used to describe her: Purposeful Impactor, Relationally Intuitive, Encouraging Shepherd, Faith-filled, and Burden Bearer.

This episode is going to be so timely for you if you’ve had trouble answering the question: What am I good at? especially as it relates to your God-shaped dream.

Jill and I talk about why it’s so helpful to know where you’re naturally gifted, and the multiple paths you can take to bring a dream to life—there is not just one way—and a practical exercise to help you examine what gives you energy and what drains you.

Before we jump in to part 2, I want to be sure though that you hear this conversation with this filter:

o   This whole conversation about strengths is not about focusing on what is amazing about you in order to make your dream an overnight success. That is not a real thing! There is no overnight success.

o   Plus, having a God-shaped dream that functions within your talents and strengths doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy. Or, flip that on its head, if it’s hard it doesn’t mean it’s not a God-shaped dream,

o   Because talents take time and effort to become strengths.

And, more than anything, we’re called to live in dependence on Christ and live for His glory, NOT for our own glory or our strength.

A dream that requires that of you—to depend on Him—is a God-shaped dream and knowing and paying attention to your natural talents will provide important clues as to HOW you might go about pursuing your dream with the gifts God has given you.

I’m your host, Merritt Onsa, a Christian life coach. I’m kind of like the Joanna Gaines for women of faith who have big dreams about how God might reorder the second half of your life so you can use your gifts and life experiences to usher in beauty, redemption, healing and service to others. It’s not a redesign of your home that we’re working on. It’s a brand-new way to live—in freedom, free from fear, free from second-guessing yourself all the time, and free from the lies that the enemy has used to keep you quiet and playing small in the past. Isn’t it about time more of us who believe in Christ started living that way?

I’m on a mission to engage 10,000 women worldwide to start taking intentional and purposeful steps that will bring their God-shaped dreams to life. If you believe in Jesus and you see his work in your life and you’re aware that you’ve been given gifts, talents and a life story that could serve and benefit others, maybe you’re among those 10,000. I hope that you are, because you’re here listening to a podcast about dreams.

Maybe you’re looking for a chance to see if your dream has legs. You want to try it on for size and figure out if it’s possible. You want to be inspired and encouraged that there’s hope for what you’ve been dreaming all these years. Maybe you’ve been too fearful in the past, or someone dashed your dreams with a comment that hit too close to home, or you just haven’t had time to figure out how to proceed.

Well, my friend, this is your time. This is your space. If you have big ideas for how God could use the gifts He’s given you and the years of your life that remain, and you have a dream that would serve others, let’s figure out how to turn that heartfelt hidden dream into real, actionable plans with impact for God’s kingdom work in the world.

Merritt Onsa:

Welcome back, Jill Felix. This is part two.

Jill Felix:

Hello.

Merritt Onsa:

Hello. So we talked last week about your story and just how God has brought you into learning so much more about StrengthsFinder and Core Clarity facilitation. So I want you to just kind of give us a big picture for anybody who either has no idea what we're talking about, or maybe they are where you were in 2008 when you took Strengths Finder, and you're like, what do I do with this? Talk about why is it so important that we understand our talents?

Jill Felix:

Yeah, well, I think about the body of Christ and how, Why should the hand say to the foot that I don't need you, or the eye or the ear or the mouth, that there's some roles within Christian communities or even the church that seem more important, but really, all the roles within the church or within communities are important, whether you're behind the scenes or whether you're up front. And we all lead in different ways. And I think that it's easy for… I can remember being in New Zealand on a team from 2006 to 2010 and thinking, wow, I don't actually know what I'm good at. Like, this person knows that they're really good at design, or this person's really good at evangelism, and this person's good at that. But I didn't realize that planning events was actually a gift. You know, putting together events; that's not fun for everyone. And I thought, oh, well, that's kind of silly. I'm just planning an event. How hard is that? But to other people, that is hard. And for some people, speaking in front of someone for three hours is really easy, but for other people, they would prefer to be behind the scenes.

And so I think that it's helpful for us to know how we're wired and gifted so that we can bring that to the table. And when we're not bringing that to the table, we actually hurt the communities that we're in because they need us.

Like, it's noticeable on teams when you're missing some of the gifts, you're like, oh, we really need someone who's good at that, even though that's not super exciting. Like, or, you know, someone who's a high analytical person behind the scenes, working all the finances for conferences. You need that person.

You also get energy when you use the gifts that God's given you. And that's not to say that when we're walking with God, we don't do some of the things that, like, if God told me, Jill, I want you to move overseas and do something really hard. That's not something you're wired in. I would do it. I'm gonna listen to God and be obedient.

But when we're doing the things that we're naturally wired for, we get energy from them, and then people around us get energy from us. So it's important.

Josh and I have definitely been in a lot of different roles, in a lot of different jobs, where some of them made us really tired and burned out, and some of them have been really fun. And so it's helpful for people to know, what are you good at? Because then you can lean into that because you're going to be great at that.

Merritt Onsa:

I love how you talked about we all need one another and one another's talents. And you quoted the verse much more beautifully than I did earlier in an episode this month. But the different parts of the body and if we're missing a big toe, I mean, how do we walk? It just affects everything.

Jill Felix:

It's so true.

Merritt Onsa:

Yeah. So for anyone listening who's maybe taken StrengthsFinder but doesn't know what to do with it, will you talk a little bit about how the talents, like the results of that assessment, can become strengths? And what do we need to do if we're not sure? Like, maybe we look at our top five and we don't really know how those show up in our lives. What do we do now?

Jill Felix:

Yeah. Well, I'm so thankful for Gallup and how they put together the StrengthsFinder assessment. It's an incredible tool. People don't know this, but there's actually an algorithm in the assessment and it pays attention to how quickly you answer questions.

So the things that you're gifted at, when you answer those really quickly, or actually the areas where you're like, I'm really not gifted at this, you'll answer those quickly, too. So I think deliberative is my number 34 talent, which I knew it would be. But it pays attention to how quickly you're answering questions, and it starts to push your top talents to the top.

So when you get your results back, you'll get your top five talents. You can pay to get the whole list of 34, but when I start coaching people, I coach them in their top five for the first two to three coaching times that I meet with them. And then you can, usually, if I meet with people four or five times, I'll have them get the full talent list because we do function within our top 10, 12, 15 talents. And it's really fun to see that. Oh, my gosh, I geek out over the top 15.

But early on, when I was going through training, I was a little confused because I'm like, well, what's the difference between a talent and a strength? And why is the book called Strengths Finder 2.0 if I'm getting my top five talents?

And the way that it works is that your talents are the underlying building block that you need in order to develop a strength; and a strength is consistent performance in an activity you love doing. Like, a strength is something you're going to be doing really well. The talent is an underlying building block. So I give the example of communication. Someone has communication in their top five, and they use that talent. Maybe they're in speech and debate. Maybe they're a professor at CU Boulder and they teach classes five days a week. That communication talent is going to become a strength quicker than if they're not using it very much.

Jill Felix:

A strength is consistent, near perfect performance in an activity that you love doing. And a strength. Notice it says: It's an activity that you love doing. So when I, with one of our kids, if they're like, I'm really good at math, but I don't love it, they might not want to go into a career where they're using math all the time.

Jill Felix:

So I do a lot of career coaching with young juniors and seniors in high school because it's fascinating to see their talents. And sometimes they might be moving towards a career that would actually make them very tired.

Merritt Onsa:

Right. Wouldn't that have been helpful for all of us going to college 30 years ago?

Jill Felix:

Yes, I know. I wish I would have known earlier than when I was, what, in my 30s? 40s?

Merritt Onsa:

Yeah. Yeah.

I hope you’re enjoying today’s conversation and considering what you’re hearing that can apply to your own big dream.

We were never meant to do these things alone, so I’ve got something for you that might help…

Imagine a space where everyone understands your journey without explanation.

Where a story shared makes you think, “Finally, someone who gets it!” and you instantly feel at home with this group of women.

Where admitting fear, perfectionism, or procrastination isn’t just venting; it’s the next step toward renewing your mindset, and a reminder of our hope in Christ, not in our performance or results.

It’s a place where imposter syndrome doesn’t get a foothold because we are secure in our identity, value and worth in Jesus (but maybe we just needed a sister to speak a little truth over us that day).

This is the Dream Believers community that I’m talking about – a virtual space bringing together some of the most heartfelt, Jesus-loving women with big dreams that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Although our particular dreams are as different as we are unique image bearers of God, we are walking the same road, fighting back lies of the enemy, ditching procrastination, and beginning to believe we are capable of the next right steps.

Some of the best connections happen in the smallest moments in the community. A struggle shared on a Tuesday afternoon, by evening there’s a collection of ideas and a few “me-too” replies.

If you’re ready for a community to surround you in pursuing your God-shaped dream, or figuring out how to begin, then Dream Believers is for you.

I only open the doors a few times each year, so this is your moment to get your name on the list for exclusive early-bird access when that time comes. Go to merrittonsa.com/dreamco. That’s merrittonsa.com/dreamco.

These are the women you’ll be thanking by name when you’re looking back a year from now, amazed at what God has done with the dream He’s given you.

Again, the link to get on the list is merrittonsa.com/dreamco

And now, back to the conversation…

Merritt Onsa:

So the work that you and I did that really was so profound for me was I had probably taken Strengths Finder. Maybe when you did. Maybe. I don't know. It was a long time ago. But we sat and we looked through those strengths, and you helped me to see that piece of like, what is it, like, my best self. We had to do a best-self statement. And that was where the light bulb came on for me because I looked at the very specific definitions of each of the strengths and could see, oh yeah, that's me, and that's me, and that's me. And then I was able to write like a full statement around it. (It still needs some editing.)

But that was like in a season of me thinking about like, what is the specific thing that I am really good at? And some of these more like touchy feely, like human relation kind of strengths, I think are harder to put your finger on. Like, yeah, what am I good at? Coaching. What does that mean?

So anyway, as I was reading or listening to the audio book, Living Your Strengths, which you pointed me to, the author talks about that there are no two paths that are the same. And he was specifically talking about an example of spiritual growth. So that somebody who has more of an analytical wiring is probably going to grow spiritually very different than someone who has more of an empathy or a relatability strength. And I thought that was really helpful in thinking about the path to our dreams that because there are so many different talents and different combinations of talents that someone might listen to the Devoted Dreamers Podcast and hear, you know, an author talk about how she took the path to writing a book. And that's not meant to be prescriptive. It's meant to be like, well, here's an example of how one person did it. And what I want to emphasize for the listener is that because of what you're wired, the ways you're wired, you might pursue that same dream in a very different way. And that is perfectly okay.

Jill Felix:

Definitely.

Merritt Onsa:

I had a, like a. I thought of a little example for me. Oh, let me just say this: What he says in the book is: identify the results you want—so in that example, spiritual growth was the result that he was using—then you figure out how to get there, versus I'm going to figure out what I need to do first to grow.

And so for me and thinking about spiritual growth instead of following somebody else's formula, because I found that the whole like, like 30 minute quiet time at 6am in the morning every day made me feel super rigid and like performative. Like if I don't check that box, there is something wrong with me. I'm not a good Christian.

And what I realized that like I have an Adaptability is my number one. So I can like go, do whatever, you know, you can change your plans with me and I'm not gonna be mad. And I know that I can change my plans with God and he's not going to be mad.

So I might sit at my desk at 8:00 in the morning and do a little bit of Bible study. Or last week I sat in the dentist office while my girls were getting their teeth examined and I did my Bible study there and it was like, I don't know, 4:00 in the afternoon, it didn't matter.

Now, I may prefer the morning to start my day that way, but for me it's like, well, I just want to make sure I get through the Bible study to have that connection with the Lord today, whether it's 4:00pm at the dentist or 8:00 at my desk. So I don't know if that's a good example.

Jill Felix:

That's a great example.

Merritt Onsa:

Two paths. Yeah. Or more than one path.

Jill Felix:

And it could also be that you have connectedness, because …

Merritt Onsa:

It could also be that. Tell me, talk more about that.

Jill Felix:

Well, I'm a little bit like you as well with, I definitely set goals, but I'm pretty flexible in the sense that I listen to the Lord's leading more than my, like, hey, I made this plan. Or like even today, what? I have like eight pages of notes, but I haven't even looked at them.

So, I think the connectedness people tend to be a little bit flowy. When we, when we think of connectedness people, they are the people that are in a river, on a tube and they're going a direction, they are going down that river, but they're kind of flowing throughout the river and they might move to one side and then to the other side. They're still going in that direction towards that goal. They're flowy.

Merritt Onsa:

It's different than a strategic person.

Jill Felix:

I'm a little bit like you. Like, I try to pound out my work in the morning and then I'm like, the afternoon's a little flowy, but sometimes it doesn't always work that way either. But there are definitely people with discipline. High achievers, which is why it's really fun to coach people. Because you see, okay, what are your gifts and talents? And for some people, going and sitting in a coffee shop and journaling is fun.

Whereas when I coached the Lifelines outdoor team, one of the guys was like, Jill, I am not going to sit in a coffee shop and journal for my sabbatical. That is so silly. Well, I said, well, why don't you go on a Sabbath six-day backpacking trip and connect with the Lord out in the adventure, you know, out in the outdoors.

Jill Felix:

So everyone.

Merritt Onsa:

He was like, yes.

Jill Felix:

Yeah. And even with homework, I laugh when I coach people that have a lot of the extroverted talents, they have a tough time doing the homework. Whereas, you were my perfect student because you showed up with all of your paperwork and all of your questions filled out because of all of your green talents that I love.

Merritt Onsa:

Oh, that's so great. See, I love how you're talking about your coaching, because that's really what I want people to hear about, is if you're kind of stuck in not really knowing or you're thinking about your dream in a specific way, and you're wondering, like, am I gonna pursue this in this way? And it, like you said, it's gonna make me tired or it's gonna make me weary or discouraged because I'm not really working in my talents.

So, yeah, I guess at least my next question is, what advice would you give somebody who's in that place of, I have a dream, I don't really know how to pursue it, and I'm not sure what to do with my talents.

Jill Felix:

Well, first off, I mean, Josh and I have both been through every assessment you can possibly imagine. The reason that I stuck with StrengthsFinder or the Gallup CliftonStrengths assessment is it's so practical, applicable. I find that people don't get obsessed in a way that they do or confused. I think it's very straightforward.

So I don't think it's just because I'm trained in Strengths Finder, but I think it's also probably one of the most helpful tools I've seen as I've coached people, that it helps them to take the next step of what, which way should I go with this dream or this goal?

Like, I mean, I could give you an example. My husband makes furniture, and we found that, I don't know, he had, like, a broad range of dreams and goals that he was working towards. And he realized that because he has connectedness and because he's flowy as well, that when he was making furniture that people would bring in, and they're like, okay, I want this specific type of furniture. I want you to build this. I have all these special things I want you to do to this table. That that stressed him out.

But when he would go to the thrift store and buy a piece of furniture, bring it home, fix it up the way he wanted to fix it up and sell it, that was a lot more energizing for him. So those are connected to his talents.

And I would watch him…

So this is a really easy thing that you can do. I'm going to just give you everyone one step that you can do—this has nothing to do with StrengthsFinder—take a piece of paper and on one side write Gains, and on the other side, like, put a line in the middle. On the other side write Drains and write down everything that gives you energy and write down everything that makes you tired.

So that's a first step that I always do. Even if I'm having a week where I'm really tired, I'm like, what is my problem? Like, why am I tired? I've probably met with too many people that have tough stories, and my empathy talent might be a little bit worn out. So I'm like, okay, I just need to go for a bike ride; I need to go and sit and have some fun.

But those energy Gains and Drains can also help you see, like, what you care about, what energizes you? What should I be putting my energy into? Because there's definitely jobs that I've had where I'm like, well, you know, Josh and I both worked at a camp one summer and it was a good fit, but it wasn't the best fit, and we came home pretty tired.

And so that energy Gains and Drains is maybe an easy, easy first step. There's a lot of breadcrumbs in that alone. That's something I do on a weekly basis, even as I tweak my own schedule, even as I tweak how I coach.

And I, over the years have realized, one of the guys that coached us said, hey, Josh and Jill, what is your hedgehog factor? And I was like, what are you talking about? He said, what do you have the most experience in? And Josh and I are, like, actually, raising support, being on the missions field, praying, stepping out in faith, sharing our faith, trusting God for hard things.

And he said, usually that's that area that you have the most experience in is an area of like, natural giftedness. Of like, okay, well, you already have 20 years of experience in this. You don't want to throw that away. Like, the person who maybe has worked in the corporate setting, they're going to know more 20 years working corporate than I would know because I've been in the missions field for 20 years.

All that to say is that that's what moved me towards: Why do I care about coaching believers so much? is because I've actually been on a lot of teams with believers. I care deeply about them, and I watch people crash and burn, and I'm like, oh, but I want to help you. Like, I don't want you to crash and burn. So it's probably my connectedness and belief, my empathy. I have a huge heart for believers finishing the race.

Merritt Onsa:

Yeah. Explain the hedgehog. Why does that have anything to do with the hedgehog?

Jill Felix:

So the hedgehog factor is that we've worked with believers for 20 years, like, on teams…

Merritt Onsa:

But why is it a hedgehog? Why is it not a porcupine?

Jill Felix:

Okay, so I did actually email him this week, and I was like, where did the name hedgehog come from? And I can't find anything online that explains it.

Merritt Onsa:

It's just his thing. It's what he says.

Jill Felix:

It's just his thing. And when I figure that out, I will let you know. But he calls it the hedgehog factor. I don't know where he got it.

Merritt Onsa:

I bet a child who knows about hedgehogs could answer that question for us. Like some sort of characteristic of a hedgehog.

Jill Felix:

I even looked it up. I was like, where is he getting this? And he didn't email me back in time. But I think more than anything, it's…

Merritt Onsa:

Tune in; we'll come back to that.

Jill Felix:

Like, what do you have the most experience in? And you know what? Growing up, everyone in our family, my grandfather, my great grandfather was a cobbler. My grandfather owned his own gas station. My uncle and my dad owned their own businesses. And we have a lot of family members that run their own businesses; they're realtors. And so that's even in my wiring of, like, lots of entrepreneurs. So for me, I've got Learner in my top five. A lot of entrepreneurs also have Learner or, like, Input because they're willing to learn to move their business in a different direction if, hey, we're in the middle of COVID. Entrepreneurs are willing to shift and learn, and that's a really fun talent for that.

Merritt Onsa:

Very cool.

Well, I do not want to let you go without giving you a chance to talk about a way that you can support listeners of this podcast, if they want to do some Core Clarity coaching or learn from you. You have the floor.

Jill Felix:

Yeah, well, I actually set up a special page for all of you. So if you go to radiatelifecoaching.com/dreamers-workshop, I have set up discounts for each. There's $50 off each package. So depending what you pick. $50 off any package. I coach students, usually juniors and seniors in high school, college students is that package. I coach adults, which would be like, what I did with you, Merritt.

I coach adults. A lot of times when I coach the adult, then that person is like, hey, will you coach my spouse? So I do have couples workshops, and I'm telling you, this was the most helpful thing for Josh and I, it hands down, was the most helpful tool in our marriage.

And then the fourth one is that I do coach families. I've actually coached a lot of families recently. Christian families and teams, whether you've got a Bible study, and you're like, hey, let's go through this as a Bible study or a small group. So those are the four packages that I have, and I'm giving $50 off any package to the Devoted Dreamers podcast.

Merritt Onsa:

Yay. Thank you so much. Of course, it was such a great investment of time, and it hit me at a really good season, too, when I was asking a lot of questions about, what am I doing? Who am I? God, how did you wire me?

Jill Felix:

You're so gifted at what you do. It's noticeable. I mean, since 2016, you've been doing this podcast, and I thought, I don't know if I could do that. Like, I don't think I have the wiring for doing it. But you do. And I loved seeing your talents when they came back. I'm like, oh, man. Merritt's talents are perfect for this podcast.

Merritt Onsa:

Oh, my gosh.

Jill Felix:

We are so blessed by you, Merritt. And I've absolutely been blessed to have you as my friend, and I love praying with you. And such a kind person, loyal, easy to connect with. I'm so thankful for you.

Merritt Onsa:

Thanks, Jill. I don't know if I can follow that up with anything better. So it is a joy to walk with you, to live in close proximity, that we get to see one another.

The backstory is Jill and I met through Moms in Prayer. Our kids go to the same school, and it's just been precious to be with other believing moms as we walk our kids through their years of education. So thank you for leading that and hosting us and being also such a good friend.

Jill Felix:

You're welcome. Thanks for having me.

Merritt Onsa:

Thank you.

My friends, tune in every week. Like I said, this is going to be a weekly show this year. Invite your friends. Share this episode and mostly trust God’s guidance for the dream that He has given you.

Finally, Daughter of the King, you were made for a beautiful purpose. Your identity and security rest in him, as does your dream, because the Lord is good and his ways are always good. No weapon formed against you will prosper because you belong to Him.

Until next week, stay faithful, keep dreaming. And remember, trusting God with your next step doesn’t mean it isn’t going to be scary. It means taking the step anyway. That’s what faith is.

You are welcome here among women braving those scary steps in faith, knowing our dreams matter because they are His.

Until next time, I’m Merritt Onsa, your dream coach and sister in Christ walking by faith with you in the dream.

Have a great week.
