202 || The Delight of Keeping it Simple and Working from Your Zone of Genius || Sarah Maddack

The story of how Sarah Maddack discovered her God-shaped dream illustrates the value of keeping things simple and paying attention to what flows naturally out of the gifts, talents, and experiences God has given you. Sarah didn’t know the path He would take her on; none of us do. But she was willing to take risks and try new things, to stand out from the crowd, and to trust that God is so much bigger than any of the insecurities she may have felt in the beginning.

IF YOU NEED PERMISSION TO NOT TAKE YOURSELF SO SERIOUSLY, THIS IS THE EPISODE FOR YOU.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if pursuing your God-shaped dream could feel easy and natural?

Maybe it seems too far-fetched to equate Sarah’s happenstance slug-on-a-rug claim to fame with the possibility of your dream bearing similar fruit. But to me, this is a clear reminder that God made people in specific ways. He gifted each one of us differently. You can’t just mimic someone else’s efforts and, all of a sudden, their success becomes yours. It doesn’t work that way, and that would never be the authentic you that you were created to be.

So why not just be that person! Not sure who she is? It’s worth spending whatever time it takes to explore the things you love to do. Pay attention to what sparks your interest. Pray for clarity about what He uniquely created you for. It’s in there. I am sure of it!

I love Sarah’s encouragement to not take yourself so seriously probably because I so easily fall into that trap. If you do too, find a comfortable spot to listen to my conversation with Sarah and then give yourself space at the end to pray and contemplate what dreaming with this kind of freedom might look like on you!

A few of my favorite takeaways from this conversation:

  1. When she shares her dad’s advice on the five things to consider in finding your purpose.

  2. The value of trying new things (even if they seem scary) primarily because God can use anything! For Sarah, it was a slug on her rug!

  3. And why you need to stop second-guessing yourself or overthinking the next steps in your dream.

Scripture:

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.  I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”
~ Jeremiah 29:11-14 (NIV)

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
